Introduction to yoga

Coming up with an introductory guide to yoga is very difficult. This is because there are so many different types of yoga out there. It is going to be nigh on impossible to cover everything. So, on this page, we are going to cover the basics. We are going to tell you the things that you must know about yoga. We are sure if something catches your eye, you will go out and do more research.

What is yoga?

While there are several different yoga styles nowadays, we can trace the core concept of yoga back about 2,000 years to an Indian called Patanjali. He can up with a book called the ‘Yoga Sutra’. This book contains almost 200 ‘rules’ of yoga. No matter the style of yoga, they will conform to at least a few of these rules.

It is worth noting that the yoga back then was ever so slightly different to the yoga that is practiced now. This is because the Yoga Sutra gave eight core concepts that somebody must follow when practicing yoga. Nowadays, it is common for most styles of yoga to focus on just one or two, namely asana (postures) and pranayama (breathing).

What are the benefits of yoga?
Most people who are considering taking up yoga have heard that it is one of the most beneficial activities you can do. It is! Here are a few of the benefits that you will be able to enjoy. However, it is worth noting that not all yoga styles will have these benefits!

It is something that you can practice on your own! There are plenty of yoga courses out there which allow you to learn in the comfort of your own home. You can do that, although some people also love the social aspect of going to a class.

You will boost your metabolism. This makes yoga fantastic if you are looking to lose weight.
Increase flexibility in your body.

Increase your strength. Your will even be toning up your muscles at the same time.
Some types of yoga will allow you to feel relaxed. Many people use yoga as a sort of ‘stress buster’.

You can improve your cardiovascular health.

You can prevent or boost your recovery from certain injuries.

How do you know what yoga is right for you?

This is going to be a very personal decision. If you live in a medium or large area, you will probably find a couple of yoga classes being run on a regular basis. You would do well to attend at least a few of them. This way you will get an idea as to the type of yoga that you can undertake. You will get an idea as to what feels right for you too! If you are a beginner, then make sure you avoid those intermediate and expert classes. There are many, many people out there who underestimate just how intense yoga can get. Do not be one of those people!
